Arrive in Lhasa

Welcome to Lhasa, the heart of Tibet. Upon arrival at Lhasa Gonggar Airport or Lhasa Railway Station, your local guide and driver will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in downtown Lhasa.

During the drive, enjoy views of the scenic Lhasa River and your first glimpse of the Tibetan Plateau. After hotel check-in, the remainder of the day is free for rest. Since Lhasa sits at an altitude of approximately 3,650 meters, it is recommended to take it easy, drink plenty of water, and allow your body time to acclimatize.

Standing high above the city, this UNESCO World Heritage Site houses invaluable Buddhist relics, exquisite murals, sacred scriptures, and golden stupas.

A complimentary afternoon tea experience near Potala Palace is included.

Later, continue to the revered Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s most important religious site. Built during the Tubo Kingdom period, the temple attracts countless pilgrims who come to worship the famous statue of the young Buddha Sakyamuni.

Outside the temple, wander through the lively Barkhor Street, where pilgrims and visitors circle the sacred temple while spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras.

Your first highlight is Yamdrok Lake, one of Tibet’s three sacred lakes. Its brilliant turquoise waters stretch across the plateau, creating one of the region’s most photographed scenes.

Continue to the impressive Karola Glacier, a massive glacier descending from the surrounding snow-capped peaks. The ice formations provide a striking contrast against the rugged mountain terrain.

Along the route, pass through Gyantse, a historic Tibetan town famous for its fortress and cultural heritage. After crossing the fertile Gyantse Plain, arrive in Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city.

Upon entering the Mount Everest National Nature Reserve, visit Rongbuk Monastery, the highest monastery in the world and one of the most famous viewpoints for Mount Everest.

The monastery is famous for its magnificent 26-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha statue, intricate chapels, and rich religious heritage.

After the visit, travel back to Lhasa through the scenic Yarlung Tsangpo Valley.

Lhasa – Namtso Lake – Northern Tibet Grasslands – Lhasa

After breakfast, set out for Namtso Lake, one of the most famous natural attractions in Tibet and one of the region’s three sacred lakes.

The journey itself is part of the experience. Along the way, you’ll travel across the vast Northern Tibet Grasslands, pass sections of the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, and enjoy distant views of the magnificent Nyainqentanglha Mountain Range. Herds of yaks and sheep often dot the open plains, offering a glimpse into the traditional nomadic lifestyle of northern Tibet.

Crossing Nagenla Pass (5,190m), you’ll reach the breathtaking shores of Namtso. At an altitude of more than 4,700 meters, Namtso is recognized as one of the highest saltwater lakes in the world. Its crystal-clear blue waters, framed by snow-capped mountains, create one of the most spectacular landscapes on the Tibetan Plateau.

After spending time at the lake, return to Lhasa while continuing to enjoy the scenery of the Changtang grasslands.

A Pilgrimage Around the Mountain in the Year of the Horse
I traveled to Tibet—this land closest to heaven—to convey a connection that runs deep within my soul. 🏔 Everyone harbors an invisible mountain in their heart, along with a step they have long yearned to take but haven't yet dared to make. Summoning the courage to embrace my fears and worries, I turned a dream into reality, one step at a time. A huge thank you to the travel agency for providing an amazing tour leader, Gaga; her hearty laughter filled the entire journey with joy. Thanks also to our driver, Tenzin, for safely escorting us across thousands of kilometers to every stop. My heartfelt gratitude to both of you for making my second trip to Tibet such a success.
